Front Sight Mail Bag: Beat Cop vs SWAT

April 8th, 2009

Dr. Piazza,

This is so insightful.

I have often questioned the need for SWAT in the standard police department. I can see FBI (HRT) and AFT being responsible for this type of response when needed. To spend the money needed for a reactionary force is wasteful in local municipalities.

They always arrive well into the event and in the case of Columbine. The time taken before they moved in, caused people to bleed out waiting for help.

Just as with the courageous officer in NC. A well trained police force can take immediate action. A beat cop could have spotted the car blocking the door in the New York incident and called in the suspicious activity. Then entered to perhaps stop the killings or at a minimum, reduce the number killed. Community policing works!

I like your straight talk and look forward to my visit to Front Sight in May.

Thank you for sharing.

Ken S.
