Front Sight Mail Bag: One Woman’s Story

Dear Dr. Piazza,
As I read your Monday blog today, it made me think back to the time when I first considered getting my first handgun. I was also at the time becoming good friends with a very dedicated and highly trained Sheriff’s Deputy. As we discussed the reasons I wanted a gun, what it would take legally to get one, and how to use it, he kept repeating the mantra you keep emphasizing: HAVE A GUN… HAVE THE MINDSET… and HAVE THE ABILITY to use it!
Twenty-five years later, I can remember his voice saying those same three things to me, and demanding that I carefully and prayerfully consider whether I would have the right mindset and have the ability to use it properly should I be attacked and fear for my life. When I could assure him of that mindset, he helped me choose my first handgun, then trained me in proper handgun safety, and stressed having the right mindset at all times.
I never go anywhere without my gun, except when I have to fly and it would be more of a hassle to take it than leave it home, but I always feel exposed and vulnerable somewhat without it. What you stress: HAVE A GUN… HAVE THE MINDSET… and HAVE THE ABILITY to use it, is absolutely critical for anyone who has a gun! You have to be willing to use your gun effectively to stop the attack, and not hesitate.
From the training that deputy gave me, I’m still very much “aware” of my surroundings whenever I’m out, no matter where I am, and no matter the circumstances; and I’m never without that gun if I can help it. The only way a gun can protect you is if it’s with you, easy to access and loaded!
