Ignatius Piazza: What Would You Do?

June 28th, 2010

Every now and then I find a real-life video that provides several good lessons to learn without you having to get hurt to learn them.

This week’s blog features one of those great videos.

Watch this video and ask yourself what would you do in the same situation? Then see my comments that follow the video for valuable lessons that will keep you out of trouble in a similar situation.

Did you find yourself wanting to deliver a little street justice to some punks who needed a good ass whuppin?

I thought so… yeah, I felt the same way too, BUT taking such aggressive action would get you in more trouble than a bike lock is worth.

Have you come to the conclusion that in most cases you cannot count on “security guards” to guard anything or provide you or anyone else with security?

I hope so… because even the street punks knew the security guards would not do anything to them.

So if the security guards won’t do anything to detain a thief who is threatening to beat you up if you don’t take your bike and ride away, what should you do?

As hard as it is to stomach this, the smart answer is to smile, take your bike (the punk never stole the bike, he just cut the lock) and ride away.

The other answer is to do what you witnessed the bike owner do and confront the thief in an attempt to detain him over cutting a bike lock. You can see where such action will lead you…

Although I was quite impressed with his level of courage and confront, the bike owner showed more balls than brains.

This situation could have gone very badly for him. It could have escalated into fighting THREE street punks over a bike lock with the security guards doing nothing other than “observing and reporting” as he took a beating.

Fortunately, the thief was more bark than bite and decided to walk away rather than carry out his threat to assault the bike owner.

I loved the bike owner’s question to the security guards at the end regarding whether he should start carrying a gun?

My answer to him is, “YES!” He should get a concealed weapons permit, proper training, and start carrying a gun! EVERYONE who wants to be in control of their own safety, and never have to rely on “security guards” or the police to protect them should be armed and trained.

However, in this specific case, as it played out, a gun would not have done much good because you cannot legally shoot someone OR present your weapon to detain them over cutting a bike lock. Doing either will simply end up with YOU in jail.

Had the situation escalated to a point where the bike thief did in fact, carry out his threat and begin to assault the bike owner or the three punks decided to gang up on the bike owner, THEN and ONLY THEN, would the bike owner have been justified in presenting a weapon to stop their attack.

Even if justified, after the dust settles and you pay all your legal fees, you will still have to ask yourself if a bike lock was worth it. I KNOW IT IS NOT FAIR, but it is real.

We carry guns to protect ourselves and those we care about from the immediate danger of serious bodily injury or death.

This video presents some very good lessons. I hope the video and my comments enlightened you.

I also hope you make the proper decision to get armed and trained to protect yourself and your family for what lies ahead…
