Front Sight Mail Bag: What I’d Tell Others…

February 2nd, 2014

Dear Dr. Piazza,

I’d tell others to quit making excuses and just go attend a course!  I had wanted to come for a while but of course, I had excuses with time, finances, work schedule, other obligations, cats, (Yes, really cats.)  Etc.  One day I decided to just do it.  It was getting cooler even in Las Vegas, so I knew if I didn’t go now, I’d have to wait till next spring.  So glad I did it.

To my friends who think they know enough. They will appreciate all details and eye opening things.  Front Sight instructors find your bad habits and actually monitor your progress.

To my friends who don’t own a gun, and think I’m crazy. I’d tell them to stop arguing that they don’t need a gun, stop being in denial that they will ever have to defend themselves. And at least learn one way to defend yourself and learn it well from the best.

To my friends who hunt deer, so they think they know how to gun fight with real opponent.  Take a course and learn what it means to fight with a person who wants to hurt you 3-15 feet away from you.  Fix malfunction…deer will just run away. Bad people keep coming at you while you fumble.

To my friends who have never even thought about guns in general.  This is a life skill and also a social skill. We live in the world with both good and bad people. Taking a 4 day course teach you not only how to handle firearms, but it also teaches us to be responsible and respectful to others. We also have to be able to communicate well with anti-gun folks, and raise kids with firearms well. Even if you choose not to carry a gun after taking a course, you will understand and appreciate those who do; sort of like accepting different religions.

What would I tell my friends and family about my experience?

The physical and mental demand during the 10 hours a day, 4 days straight training made me experience “ups and downs”. What I thought I did well 2 hours ago didn’t go so well in afternoon.  What I didn’t intend to be good at on my first course was improved unexpectedly on the second day.  What I thought I had, I couldn’t perform it so well next day.  A staff member tells me one little thing, and made an immediate difference.  What I thought I knew, multiple staff corrected me over and over. I realize my brain got it, but my muscle memory has not.

Oh, also, yes, I’ve been told to practice in past.  Up until this point, I did it when I could.  I don’t remember the last time I dry-practiced. This four day training re-emphasized to me the importance of dry practice. Until now, I didn’t understand the fact shooting live ammo should feel just like dry practice. No one told me that!  I also don’t want to lose all little things I was taught to do. I want to make dry-practice my daily routine just like brushing my teeth is. I want to see how much I improve by doing that before I come back for my second visit to Front Sight.

Thank you so much for wonderful experience!
