Front Sight’s Monday Blog: Waiting Too Long to Shoot…

Last week I shared a tragic story of a concealed weapon permit holder who was shot by police outside of a Costco store.
Did the concealed weapon permit holder do something to justify a lethal response by the police?
Did the police overreact?
At this point, nobody can answer those questions and the case is surely headed to a civil court. I will keep you informed as I know more.
This week, I have a video for you that shows what happens when police wait too long to shoot and will also show you how dangerous a determined man with a knife can be.
The footage is a bit grainy but you will get the point (no pun intended).
Remember, that when confronted with an average man who has a knife in his hand and your gun is holstered, he can cover 21 feet in the same time an average man can present a handgun from a holster and fire a sighted shot to the center of mass of the assailant.
This means he will stab you just as you press the trigger.
What should this tell you?
It should tell you 3 things:
- If confronted with a man who has a knife and is acting in a threatening manner, YOU BETTER GET YOUR GUN OUT OF YOUR HOLSTER and IN YOUR HANDS and BE READY TO USE IT.
You do not have the time to try to "out draw" his advance so get your gun out and stand with it in the Ready Position (pointed 45 degrees toward the ground, finger off the trigger).
- If confronted with a man who has a knife and is acting in a threatening manner, YOU BETTER HAVE MORE DISTANCE THAN 21 FEET.
21 feet is the "average" man with a knife against the average man with holstered gun and it results in a tie with both men getting wounded. If your opponent is athletic or hyped up on drugs, he will cover 21 feet faster than the average man, so you need more distance!
If you have not been to Front Sight and cannot guarantee, under stress, your ability to deliver well placed hits on an advancing target to immediately incapacitate (drop) your attacker in his tracks, then you need more distance!
- If confronted with a man who has a knife and is acting in a threatening manner, YOU BETTER HAVE THE MINDSET THAT IF HE BEGINS TO ADVANCE YOU ARE READY AND WILLING TO SHOOT.
All the training in the world is useless in a situation like this if have not adopted the combat mindset as your own and have made the decisions ahead of time as to when and why you will shoot.
