Front Sight’s Monday Blog: 5″ Group at 1,000 Yards…

I love to see the men and women of the “Greatest Generation” honored for all they did for us.

Here is a great video honoring an 80 year old sniper from World War II.

He humbly demonstrates that once you are trained how to maintain a proper shooting platform, breath control, and trigger break, it never leaves you.

In other words, “Once a sniper, always a sniper.”

For those who wonder how 80 year old Ted Gundy could make such an unbelievable three round, 5″ group at 1,000 yards, allow me to explain that the real trick to hitting at 1,000 yards is not marksmanship but rather the art and science of properly reading and factoring into the shot, the wind, mirage, humidity, and temperature.

A man who can shoot a 1 inch group at 100 yards is pretty common these days. The same marksmanship techniques at 100 yards are employed at 1000 yards, but it takes an extremely experienced observer who has spent countless hours behind a rifle and spotting scope, studying and logging the effects of wind, from the muzzle to target, optical effects of mirage, and the relationship of humidity and temperature on the trajectory of the projectile, to dial in a marksman at 1,000 yards.

The two Army Marksmanship Unit snipers did an absolutely amazing job in dialing the proper settings on the scope for Ted Gundy to then do his equally impressive part by delivering a perfect and consistent shooting platform and trigger press, THREE TIMES IN A ROW.

It was a VERY impressive display by all involved and it truly warmed my heart to watch these three warriors share a much deserved, mutual respect and pride for their weapon craft.
