Front Sight Mailbag: From ‘Gal Who Almost Quit’
July 27th, 2017
Dear Dr. Piazza,
It did not start out well. By the end of the first day I was frustrated. Information was coming fast and furious. My partner was a young man and accomplished shooter. He was nice but extremely quiet and there was not much coaching. I was just trying to keep up. By the end of the day I was frustrated. The morning again was frustrating as the information was again coming fast. I admit that it might be my learning style and the ability to process but by lunch I was feeling pretty defeated. I thought I felt pretty good handling my gun, now I wanted nothing to do with it. When I left for the day I wasn’t sure I’d return for day 3. I did return with some angst. I regained confidence as we repeated drills and more time were spent individually with those of us struggling. Again, I realize that much of my frustration was likely due to my learning style, needing repetition, combined with a feeling I was holding up the group…these feelings self-imposed, but this is where your ranger coaches especially shined. I was so impressed with one in particular that at the end of day 4 I asked if I could request him for my daughter in law (who has never held a gun) and two sons who will be attending the 4 day course in March. My 4 day course was an experience I soon won’t forget and look forward to practicing skills and returning to improve even more; The gal who almost quit.
