The same weekend Sunshine Patriot Debra Strickland and her Nye County Commissioners SHOULD HAVE and COULD HAVE stood up for the Constitution and honored their Second Amendment Sanctuary proclamation, there was a writer in a course who was there to write a story for the NRA magazine, First Freedom.
Ironic that he chose the same weekend, when Sunshine Patriot Debra Strickland and her Nye County bureaucrats not only turned their backs on the Second Amendment, they also turned us in to the Governor of Nevada’s COVID Enforcement Agency, NOSHA.
Strickland demonstrated her Second Amendment Sanctuary proclamation was nothing but lip service when YOU NEEDED HER TO STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR YOU. Imagine the story the NRA would have written had we allowed the Governor of Nevada to close us down and send home the 900 students and members who traveled across the country to exercise their Second Amendment rights!

Fortunately, I am no Sunshine Patriot. I am willing to fight for you even when it hurts and even when I risk fines, penalties, and arrest. I’m no career politician. My word means something.
The word Sunshine Patriot refers to an individual who claims to fight against tyranny on the side of freedom, yet are unable to stick it out when the going gets tough or unfavorable.
These individuals will “shrink from the service of their country” when conditions are bad or uncomfortable for them.
It is a term meant to shame those who are false-patriots, who claim to be patriots, but will not give 100% effort when their moment of truth arrives.
Career politicians are notorious for talking about how they support our gun rights, pounding their chests about their love of our cherished Second Amendment, but when there is a real opportunity to ACTUALLY STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR IT, they look the other way, and grasp for any excuse they can find to avoid honoring their word and getting their hands dirty.
Sunshine Patriot Debra Strickland, representing the Nye County Commissioners, is one of those two-faced politicians who talks-the-talk of the importance of the Second Amendment but when she had the opportunity to defend it, could not walk-the-walk. She could have and should have stood with us to fight for our Second Amendment rights, and her Second Amendment Sanctuary proclamation, but instead deserted us and DESERTED YOU.
Now understand we are located in Nye County, Nevada, a county where Debra Strickland and her fellow Nye County Commissioners made a very public Second Amendment Sanctuary proclamation in December of 2019. You can read and hear the proclamation at:
A few days before 900 students were arriving for our September 4-7 courses, we received correspondence from Debra Strickland, the chairwoman of the Nye County Commissioners, demanding that we alter our firearms training procedures and policies to comply with the Democratic Governor of Nevada’s, unconstitutional COVID-19 restrictions or face fines, closure, etc.
Through Front Sight’s local legal counsel I sent a very detailed letter to Debra Strickland explaining the solid legal ground Front Sight has for operating our firearms training courses in the manner which we know is best. You can read the letter here: Letter to Nye County Commissioners
Front Sight’s letter gave Sunshine Patriot Debra Strickland and the Nye County Commissioners all the legal ammunition they should have needed to stand with us and fight for the Second Amendment rights of Front Sight, all Nye County residents and the 900 Front Sight students and members traveling from across the country to attend our course that weekend.
We asked the Nye County Commissioners to honor their Second Amendment Sanctuary proclamation and stand with Front Sight against the Governor’s unconstitutional COVID-19 restrictions as they apply to training with firearms, but remarkably, Debra Strickland, representing the Nye County Board of Commissioners, declined to support us.
Worse than deserting us, Strickland then sent us an email listing all the bad things that could happen to us if we did not comply.
Anyone who knows me, knows that when it comes to the Second Amendment, I WALK THE WALK! I have dedicated my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor to positively changing the image of gun ownership in this country by training responsible citizens to levels of skill at arms that far exceeds law enforcement and military standards.
We are doing it with every student we train at Front Sight who leaves us a walking, talking representative of safe, responsible and expertly-trained gun ownership. And we have trained nearly a million students! 900 were attending the week Sunshine Patriot Debra Strickland, representing the Nye County Commissioners, tried to shut us down!
As you know from my previous emails, even though Front Sight is considered “essential critical infrastructure” and is exempt from all of the Governor of Nevada’s COVID-19 Emergency Management Restrictions, we voluntarily closed Front Sight in the Spring and Summer to support the popular, but unproven notion that closing down the country would somehow flatten the curve of COVID-19 infections. I did this RELUCTANTLY.
We bit the bullet and did our part to support the Governor’s mandates, even though we did not have to comply under Nevada law, which states:
I made it very clear in my emails that we would re-open on September 1 under our usual policies and procedures.
From March until now, we watched, as you have, double standards be applied to large social gatherings. Leftist protesters and rioters are allowed to gather in huge numbers without any regard for social distancing or use of masks, and in many cases encouraged to do so by the same government officials who imposed the social gathering restrictions and mask mandates on churches, entertainment venues, sporting events, restaurants, hair salons and others. The left promoted this double standard claiming it was all done under the First Amendment allowing peaceful protest, even when the protests were not peaceful.
As September approached, we sent letters to all of our students and members preparing to attend courses this Fall to let them know that due to the tendency for masks to cause your safety glasses to fog, obscuring your vision and creating a dangerous situation while training with firearms, masks were not required on the firing line for students, safety coaches or instructors.
We also stated that due to the need for safety coaches and instructors to be within arms’ reach of students to instruct or immediately intervene if a student’s movements or actions placed themselves or others in danger, we could not adhere to any social distancing protocol.
A day after Sunshine Patriot Debra Strickland, representing the Nye County Commissioners sent her demand letter for us to comply, then deserted us when we asked her to stand with us and honor her Second Amendment Sanctuary proclamation, we received a letter from the Nevada OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Organization) which is the agency that carries out the enforcement of the Governor of Nevada’s unconstitutional COVID-19 restrictions, giving us 24 hours to agree to comply with the Governor’s restrictions or face financial penalties, sanctions, closure, etc.
I had a decision to make. I could either cave in to the demands of the Democratic Governor of Nevada and close Front Sight again because we cannot provide a safe environment for firearms training when required to wear masks and social distance OR I could fight.
I thought about what the Founding Fathers would do in this situation. I thought about what President Trump would do in this situation. I thought about the 900 students who were traveling across the country to exercise their God-given, Second Amendment rights with us at Front Sight this weekend.
I thought about the HUGE legal costs in fighting this injustice. I thought about the fines, sanctions, government wrath, potential closure that Front Sight may face and the potential arrest I may face, if I stood up for the Second Amendment and the rights of not just Front Sight and Front Sight’s members, but ALL gun owners and firearms training ranges across the country.
After running all these thoughts through my head, I made the patriotic decision and FILED a lawsuit against the State of Nevada to protect and defend our Second Amendment rights and Front Sight’s ability to train you.
I protected over 900 patriots from all across the country that gathered at Front Sight for four days of world class firearms training to exercise their First Amendment and Second Amendment rights in a peaceful protest of Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak’s unconstitutional restrictions against an “essential critical infrastructure” business, namely Front Sight Firearms Training Institute.
Our peaceful protests will continue with each and every course we run until the Governor of Nevada’s unconstitutional COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
