Front Sight Mailbag: Be Situationally Aware
April 19th, 2021
Dear Dr. Piazza,
I recently attended a course to learn how to use a handgun. The course helps bring one’s worst fears from the shadows of the mind to a reasoned, deliberate space. The course emphasizes that the first defense is risk avoidance and risk mitigation. Be situationally aware! And be ready to defend yourself. I was impressed how many women and girls were at the course facility. I spoke to several who all seemed relieved to be learning and to have overcome fears. Many were already very skilled shooters. Specifically, one young, female staff member I spoke to recalled how she had been quite terrified of firearms and overwhelmed at the prospect of handling them. Now she has worked at Front Sight for 4 years!
